Homeschooling with Autism: Day 14 A Week Full of Fun

I had an epiphany this week.  We are not having enough fun in our homeschool.  How can I convince them to finish their lessons if there is nothing to look forward to?  Would you work everyday with no promise of fun on the weekend?  Yea, me neither.

Logan is not a big fan of the art painting he has to add to his notebook.  When we finish our month of looking at an artist, we replicate one of his drawings.  This month was a little different in that we replicated one his his styles not an actual painting.  Yes, Logan's grass has grown all the way to the sky.  I would hate to have to mow that lawn.

We went with our homeschool group to see the movie Dolphin Tale.  It was a phenomenal movie in my opinion.  Madison especially liked that Hazel was homeschooled just like her.  Logan did well since the theater was empty except our group and there were no previews at the beginning.  Sensory wise is was the best movie experience we ever had.

Another day brought yet another field trip. Since we are studying botany this year,  I couldn't pass up a chance to visit a hydroponic farm in our area.  I almost cancelled at the last minute but changed my mind that morning.  Am I ever glad that I did!! Both children thought it was soooooo much fun plus we learned tons.  On top of that, both children got to try fresh organic arugula.  It was a hit!

We ended the school week with a lunch and learn workshop on composting.  I forgot to take pics.  Ooops.  We got a free lunch and learned a ton.  Logan was a tad bored but Madison was all over it.  She took very good notes as well as asked some fantastic questions.  We had a great conversation on the way home about how we represent homeschooling when we go to these events.  Logan seemed surprised at that and could see how almost dozing off in the lecture probably wasnt' the best impression to all the older people in the room.  Gotta love the kid.

I'm using this as Day 14 in my Homeschooling with Autism series.  Please check out the other posts in the series as well.  Check out what other people's homeschool week looked like over at Kris' blog, Weird Unsocialized Homeschoolers

  1. Great field trips! I have been reading all of your posts on how you make it through the days with a child with autism, You may feel like you have melt down days sometimes, but you amaze me. Keep up the good work
