Finding Florida Field Trip #1 : Dinosaur World

This week , our church went to Dinosaur World as their children's activity. I love summertime when all the kids are out of school.  We get to go on field trips to different places with different people. It helps to break up the monotony of homeschooling.  

Anyway, Dinosaur World is a park filled with dinosaur replicas that is right off Interstate 4 in Plant City.  You can see some of the dinosaurs from the highway.  We always look for the dinosaurs when we are driving and remark that we should visit.  Logan is long past the fanatical dinosaur phase but it still interests him. When church announced this trip, I jumped at the opportunity to visit.

The running joke at church is that I bring my own group. We did have room for two other friends to join us.  Notice that my children have their folders with their dinosaur pages in their hand.  Homeschooling is a 24/7 activity.  This dinosaur was interesting in that it was a replica of the one from the movie, Jurassic Park.  The actual dinosaur didn't exactly look like it was portrayed in the movie.  The park decided to put it in like the movie so people would recognize it easier.  

This was the actual size of the dinosaurs leg.  It towered over us by many feet.  The children were in awe of how tall that dinosaur must have been to have a leg that big.  I was thankful that dinosaur was no longer alive to eat me.  :)

Of course it rained on us while we were there.  This was Florida in July after all.  It rains most afternoons in Central Florida during the summer.  The humidity is unbelievable when it rains in the middle of the day then the sun comes out. Logan wanted out of the rain asap while Madison thoroughly enjoyed dancing in it.  It is not common to have a rain storm in Florida in the summer without thunder and lightning. It was a rare treat indeed.

We made some great nature discoveries too.  It is set back in a swampy wooded area.  There were lots of trees, bugs and animals that are so common in Florida.  While we were there to see dinosaurs, we got to visit   & learn about Florida nature. Madison insisted I take this picture so she could paint it later.  This is Florida to her! Love it!

 We got to dig in the Boneyard to help uncover a Stegosaurus fossil.  The museum has animatronic dinosaurs that were fun to look to interact with although it was a little creepy.  There was even a fossil dig where the kids could find sharks teeth and other items to take home.  It was a fun day all around!
